Taichung North District in Taichung City is known to have one of the most developed education, cultural and shopping areas in the country. This buzzing urban area is home to museums, lively markets, theatres, parks and temples.
Located in North District, Yizhong Street is a popular shopping area and night market in Taichung. The market often becomes crowded after dark as it attracts locals eager to shop and eat. Prices of goods are cheaper than other areas of Taichung as the area caters mainly to residents of the city, a great find for visitors seeking a bargain. Yizhong Street is near to pretty Taichung Park with its lake, pavilion and ornamental gardens. Taichung North District is also famous for its National Museum of Natural Sciences. This multi-venue complex is home to Earthquake Education Museums, Botanical Gardens, a Life Science Hall and much more, as the interactive exhibits cater to all members of the family. To escape the hustle and bustle of city life, take a walk to Maple Garden, located on the edge of North and Xitun districts. A tranquil oasis of 3 hectares, it contains a lush parkland, a lake and observatory bridge. The park is popular with locals looking for relaxation and peace within the city and making a picnic to enjoy solitude. Those wishing to travel outside the city will enjoy a trip to “Rainbow Village” or Caihongjuan Village. Taiwan has many “veteran’s villages” but they are disappearing. These villages gave shelter to soldiers retreating from mainland China. One resident began to paint the houses in vibrant colours with poignant artwork to prevent the government from tearing them down. It’s a popular attraction especially at weekends and well worth the short trip from Taichung City.
It's easy to reach all districts of the city by bus. Many main attractions such as the museums and markets can be accessed on foot in 30 minutes to an hour. The rail station is located in Central District, all of Taiwan can be accessed from here.
When markets and the educational colleges were established in 1963, it brought many visitors to North District. This transformation helped boost the nearby military dependents village and several businesses were born. Today, it’s a thriving area popular with students and tourists who come to shop the markets and explore the wonderful parks and museums.
