Known for its stunning campus, liberal concepts, scholarly elite and high-class educational programs, Tunghai University is one of the best institutions in Taiwan, located in a stunning location in Taichung. Over eight colleges, the university offers 35 different Masters programmes and 14 PhD courses, making it one of the nation’s most ranging and open schools. Located in the east of Taiwan, it is the second oldest university in the country, making it a local and national landmark and a symbol of history serving a reminder of traditional spirituality.
Shaped with two curved walls and a large glass front, the Luce Memorial Chapel is one of the key features of Tunghai University with a unique and edgy design, making it a landmark of the city as well as the campus. Students at the University can choose from a range of colleges including Management, Science, Engineering, Agriculture and Fine Arts, covering a broad basis of subjects, while visitors can explore the independent faculty buildings. The University offers a variety of student societies including a Mountain Climbing Club, which has a climbing wall memorial on campus in memory of a past leader who died in a climbing accident. Holding over 600,000 volumes, the main library of Tunghai University is another impressive building, as is the Chinese Language Centre that was one of the first of its kind in the country.
Visitors can reach Tunghai University by travelling into one of the two international airports in the country, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taoyuan and Hsiao-Kang Airport in Kaohsiung. From here, there are long distance buses and high-speed rail services to Taichung where visitors can take a shuttle bus to the university located about 11 kilometres away from the central station.
Tunghai University was originally a missionary school created with the aim to continue Christian education and meet the needs of the country acquiring an institute of high academic standards. Dadu Plateau officially founded the institute in 1955 and chose the location on Ta-tu Hill, naming it after the east sea location. Today, the mottos of the school still follow principles of truth, faith and deed, combining spiritual development with the educational fulfilment of young people.
