Things to do in Nantun District
Ling Tung University gives rise to local Nantun traditions, such as making offerings to the God of Literature at Wenchang Temple. The university is also home to Ling Tung Numismatic Museum, an extensive collection of ancient Chinese coins and currency, as well as silver ingots and bars from preceding dynasties.
Want to experience the quirky and colourful side of Nantun District? Stroll through Rainbow Village, a vibrantly hued former military housing complex now covered in expressive wall art and drawings by “Grandpa Huang”. The paintings are today considered masterpieces of Taiwanese folk art.
Nantun Old Street is the place to visit small cafes offering local cuisine. It’s also a great spot to sample Taichung’s signature drink, bubble tea. For a classic Chinese tea ceremony, visit Wu Wei Tsao Tang Tea House on Gongyi Road.
Visiting Huiwen Flower Market and Hushui'an Art Street provide glimpses into the district’s colourful side, with eclectic local art and thousands of blossoms. Venture over to the Fulfillment Amphitheater in Wen-Hsin Forest Park, which hosts outdoor concerts and the renowned Lantern Festivals.
Getting around Nantun District
Nantun District has access to major Taichung transportation networks, including high-speed rail and city buses. Rental cars are available at Taichung Airport, while scooters can be rented near the university areas. Pedicabs are less common in Nantun, but are a traditional way to view the region.
