With therapeutic hot springs flowing through its streets, Jiaoxi is a popular weekend getaway destination. It’s surrounded by rugged natural scenery, with waterfall walks and Buddhist temples to explore.
Things to do in Jiaoxi Township
Jiaoxi provides an idyllic escape from the bustle of Taipei, with its healing waters the biggest allure. It’s here that you can choose from a relaxing foot bath in the free public hot springs at Tangwei Brook Park or indulge at one of Jiaoxi’s private resorts for a more immersive experience.
If you want to explore Jiaoxi’s natural beauty, then head to the Longtan Lake Scenic Area. Walking trails meander around the water’s edge, while lush, green mountains dotted with temples envelop the landscape. Spend an afternoon hiking to the Wofongci Waterfall where you’ll find three cascades and a small pavilion to take in the views.
Interested in seeing one of Taiwan’s oldest temples? Head to the elaborate Sietian Temple which was built in the early 19th century. If you want to explore Jiaoxi’s rural villages, hire a bicycle and slowly peddle through its emerald rice paddies.
For the best views across Jiaoxi, head to the Tamkang University Lanyang Campus. Its elevated position offers panoramas across the Lanyang Plain, stretching all the way to Guishan Island (Turtle Island) nestled just offshore.
Getting around Jiaoxi Township
Jiaoxi is connected to Taipei along the Yilan Line of the national railway, although it’s far quicker to travel by bus through the Snow Mountain Tunnel. The township itself is easy to explore on foot, although a private vehicle is best for exploring the surrounding neighbourhoods.
