Built in the ancient city of Leukolla, Protaras is a picturesque resort town on the eastern shores of Cyprus. Famed for its lively beaches and impressive dive sites, it’s also near the spectacular Cape Greco National Forest Park.
Things to do in Protaras
Spend a day relaxing at Fig Tree Bay, which is named after the fig trees that line the shore and is often regarded as one of the best beaches in Europe. The sheltered waters are ideal for swimming and water sports, such as windsurfing, jet skiing and parasailing.
Stroll along the seaside promenade that extends between the sands of Fig Tree Bay and its grassy lawns. For some of the best views in Protaras, follow the walking trail that leads to the iconic Profitis Ilias church, from where there are panoramic vistas over the Mediterranean Sea.
Protaras is renowned as one of the best diving destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean, with Green Bay particularly popular with those just starting out. More experienced divers can explore the caves and crevices of the Blue House or the deep underwater pinnacles at Cyclops Bay.
To the south-east of Protaras sprawl the dramatic coastal landscapes of Cape Greco National Forest Park, which is crisscrossed by hiking and cycling trails. Visit the Cape Greco lighthouse, ancient Aphrodite temple ruins and pine-fringed beach at Konnos Bay while keeping an eye out for hedgehogs and endemic plant species.
Getting around Protaras
Larnaca International Airport is around one hour’s drive west of Protaras, with regular buses travelling to cities and towns across Cyprus. Protaras is easy to explore on foot, but having your own vehicle is best for accessing Cape Greco National Forest Park.
