The Xitun District is an expanse of green space and shopping area situated along the western edge of the city of Taichung. Known for its famous night market, spacious parks and a handful of popular theatres, the Xitun District is a great place to go for some low-key entertainment.
Things to do in Xitun District
Fengjia Night Market is one of the largest night markets in Taiwan and a popular tourist attraction, located next to Feng Chia University. Here you can shop for fairly priced clothing, try your taste buds on the exotic Feng Chia Four-in-One or gush over tasty snacks stocked at food stalls on every corner. Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and Top City are the places to go if you’re seeking out department store shopping.
If you enjoy architecture, be sure to check out the Luce Memorial Chapel, located on the campus of Tunghai University. This unique tent-like structure is situated on a hexagonal base and serves as a prominent area landmark. Be sure to check out the interior and bring a camera to photograph the unique roof inset with diamond-shaped tiles.
The National Taichung Theatre is an opera house worth exploring. The architecture is superb and there is a bistro on the top floor boasting spectacular views where you sit and enjoy a craft beer. The Ito Theatre on the fourth floor offers many shows throughout the day, but be sure to reserve a spot in advance.
When you want a break from the urban bustle, head over to the Taichung Metropolitan Park. Situated on top of Dadu Tableland, you can spend your time strolling through the observation area identifying the many local plants, walk down the therapeutic waterway or catch a show on the performing plaza.
Getting around Xitun District
Buses operate in and out of the area through Chao Ma Bus Station. You can also get around by local bus or ride the major rail network connecting to Taichung Central Station.
