With religious temples, history museums and artistic neighbourhoods, Shalu District is packed with attractions and activities to see and do. A sub district of Taichung City, Shalu District is a family-friendly area in the city centre.
Things to do in Shalu District
To learn about Taiwan’s religious roots and local customs, head to Taichung Confucius Temple, located in downtown Taichung. This modern temple is bursting with vivid colours, making it different from most temples in the area. You can also visit in the afternoon to watch the locals in prayer.
The Museum of Fine Arts displays collections of modern art from across Taiwan and East Asia. Spend the morning revelling in these masterpieces before heading to the museum’s teahouse to enjoy chai blends and fresh coffees.
Children will love the Museum of Natural Science, located a 40-minute drive south-west of the district and accessible by bus. The whole family can spend hours exploring the dinosaur exhibitions and learning about the universe before catching an educational 3D movie in the neighbouring theatre.
Take a taxi 30 minutes south of the Shalu District to find Rainbow Village, a colourful neighbourhood of outdoor art painted entirely by one man. Afterwards, head to Kura Sushi for tasty Japanese sushi or La Mode, an award-winning French bistro.
Getting there
Taichung Airport sits under a 10-minute drive east of the Shalu District and has car hire services on site. You can also arrive by train into Shalu Station, then make use of the city buses and taxis.
