Things to do in Dongshi District
Dongshih Hakka Cultural Park occupies a former train station and hosts a variety of exhibits and events. Admire modern art in the gallery and marvel at centuries-old Hakka artefacts found in the local area. The collection of Hakka folk costumes is one of the best in Taiwan.
The Da Jia River flows past Dongshi District and provides water to orchards in the surrounding countryside. Dongshi is famous for its pears, which will tantalise you with their rich flavour and colour. Visit the Pear Culture Museum to find out more about the booming industry. The museum also features several family-friendly trails that meander through the pear orchards and offer a chance to see the fruit trees up close.
Dongshi District marks the southern end of the Dongshih-Fongyuan Bicycle Greenway. The public trail follows a former railway track and takes you past emerald-green rice fields and leafy pear orchards. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch along the way.
Dongshi Forest Garden is nestled in the mountainous countryside on the eastern fringe of Dongshi District. Scenic trails wind through the park and under the lush canopy. Enjoy an invigorating soak in the natural hot springs and stay after dark to see the twinkling fireflies.
Getting around Dongshi District
Dongshi District is a 40-minute drive from Taichung City and 30 minutes from Taichung International Airport. Taxis are a fast and affordable way to get around Dongshi District. Local buses run between Dongshi District and Taichung City in around 1.5 hours.
