Consistently ranked as one of the world's top universities, the National University of Singapore (NUS) offers a prestigious line-up of publicly-funded degree programmes. With a focus on intensive research and entrepreneurial innovation, NUS is the beating heart of Singapore’s academic scene.
Thanks to more than 37,000 enrolled students, the neighbourhoods surrounding the campus are upbeat by nature. For visitors in search of an authentic and energetic Singapore experience, staying near NUS is a great choice. For sightseers in search of an authentic Singaporean experience, a few hours in “UTown” is a great way to soak up the university’s intellectual, social and cultural scenes.
From central Singapore, NUS is a short 15-minute drive. The campus is also well-linked by public transport, with MRT and public bus routes ferrying both students and visitors to stops in and around the university’s campuses.
Founded in 1905, NUS is Singapore’s oldest institute of higher learning. Chinese-born merchant and philanthropist Tan Jiak Kim is the man behind the NUS legacy and fiercely pushed for the establishment of a Singapore-based medical school. In 1905 he founded the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School, which later merged with other institutions to become the National University of Singapore.
