The quiet, residential suburb of Hougang contrasts the neon lights of downtown Singapore. Its colourful apartment blocks sit between verdant parks and bustling night markets and it’s home to several historic churches and interesting museums.
Things to do in Hougang
The centre of Hougang is Punggol Park, which features five hectares of lawn and trees with a pond, fishing promenade and cycle tracks. You’ll find lush foliage at the Japanese Cemetery Park, which offers scenic trails under flower arches and around the prayer hall.
Hougang is adjacent to Paya Lebar Airbase, and at the Air Force Museum you can get up close to fighter jets and missiles as you explore the history of the RSAF. Alternatively, visit the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and admire its ornate stained-glass windows.
There is an endless array of tantalising dishes on offer at Kovan Market and Food Centre. Try the minced meat noodles at Fa Ji or the delicious fried oysters at BedoK North 85. For dessert, Hougang Mall has some great cafes where you can buy doughnuts and cream-filled cakes.
Getting around Hougang
The easiest way to get to Hougang from central Singapore is on the metro, alighting at either Kovan or Hougang stations. Frequent buses leave the Bus Interchange next to Hougang Mall and cover the entire district.
