Things to do in Hunei District
Once a former salt pond, Qieding Wetlands is now one of the top urban birding destinations in Taiwan. It’s an important migration ground for black-faced spoonbills, as well as other species like the purple heron and glossy ibis. Some birds come as far as Siberia to spend the winter in the Qieding Wetlands.
A sandy beach and leafy palms give Jiading Coast Park a tropical feel. Stroll along the beach and stay for sunset to watch the sun sink into the South China Sea. On weekends, you can buy drinks and snacks from street food vendors.
Yuemeichi Tzu Chi Palace welcomes you with strings of brightly coloured lanterns. The ancient temple dates back to the 1600s and is dedicated to the Chinese and Taoist Deity of Medicine. It’s been rebuilt several times over the centuries but retains its original grandeur.
Fast public transport connections make it easy to sightsee in Kaohsiung City. Browse contemporary boutiques and galleries at the Pier-2 Art Centre, sip espresso at trendy cafes and shop for treasures at the famous Neiwei Flea Market. After dark, you can unwind at stylish cocktail bars and undergrounds jazz clubs. To the north is Tainan City, where you can visit centuries-old temples and visit a beautiful Art Deco department store.
Getting around Hunei District
Hunei District is easy to get around on foot or using public transport and is a 30-minute drive from Tainan City and 45 minutes from Kaohsiung City. Trains connect Hunei District with Tainan City and Kaohsiung City in less than one hour. Kaohsiung International Airport is a 40-minute drive away.
