Located in the southern part of Taiwan’s port city of Kaohsiung, Fongshan District is a largely residential area and home to the Chinese Military Academy. It’s renowned for its night markets, Buddhist temples and the sprawling Weiwuyin Metropolitan Park.
Things to do in Fengshan District
The Fongyi Tutorial Academy stands as a reminder of Qing Dynasty rule in Taiwan when Fongshan served as an important military area. The academy is built in a traditional Chinese style and features life-size caricatures depicting 19th-century life, while wooden carvings are inscribed with phrases detailing the good manners which were acceptable at the time.
Weiwuyin Metropolitan Park was created on a former military ground and now serves as a vital ecological habitat in the district. Explore the walking trails around the lake, then cross the covered footbridge that was inspired by the film “The Bridges of Madison County”.
Dating back to the late 18th century, take the time to admire the elaborate Southern Chinese architecture of Fengshan Tiangong Temple. It is famed for housing a plaque inlaid with jade which depicts gods cleaning the streets.
Want to sample some traditional Taiwanese food? The Zhonghua Street Night Market is one of Fongshan’s most popular, with delicacies such as salted crispy chicken and fig jelly dished up by its street vendors.
Getting around Fengshan District
The Kaohsiung MRT metro system connects Fongshan to the city centre, with numerous stations across the district. Most metro stations also have bicycle rental facilities, allowing you to explore the streets of Fonghan on two wheels and return your bike before jumping back on the metro.
