The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia's most popular cultural attractions and showcases a treasure trove of works from across the globe. Inside you can admire one of the country's largest collections of Aboriginal paintings, as well as European watercolours, Asian carvings and contemporary masterpieces.
The gallery is housed in a handsome neoclassical Greek building and has been welcoming visitors since 1874. Explore the gallery independently or sign up for one of the free guided tours. The gallery also hosts a colourful line-up of celebrity talks, music concerts and film screenings.
After touring the gallery, enjoy coffee and cake at the light-filled Café at the Gallery or sit down for a garden-inspired meal at the award-winning Chiswick at the Gallery restaurant. The Gallery Shop is a fantastic place to pick up postcards, books, jewellery and other art-inspired keepsakes. You can also stroll around The Domain, a sprawling public park commanding stunning views of Sydney Harbour.
Getting there
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is in the heart of the Sydney CBD, a 20-minute stroll from Circular Quay and 30 minutes from Darling Harbour. The St James and Martin Place train stations are both a 10-minute walk away.
