Named after one of the major tribes of the Arabian Peninsula, Bani Malik is an oblong-shaped neighbourhood north of Jeddah. The tribe descends from Malik al-Ashtar, who fought alongside the prophet Muhammad’s cousin, Ali ibn Abi Talib. The neighbourhood offers easy access to Jeddah’s shopping malls and waterfront attractions, including the record-breaking King Fahad’s Fountain.
Things to do in Bani Malik
You can get your retail fix at Al Salaam Mall, which is packed with international brand stores and globally-inspired eateries across its three floors. Kid-friendly rides can be found at Red Sea Beach, while the Muvi Cinemas screen international blockbusters. Directly across the road is Al Andalus Mall, which is home to American Eagle, Tokyo Games and Adidas.
Want to stretch your legs? Enjoy an evening stroll along Al-Hamra Corniche, which hugs the Red Sea north of Jeddah’s city centre. It takes in several parks where you’ll find children’s playgrounds and after-dark illuminations, as well as the modern Hassan Enany Mosque. Topped by twin minarets and gilded domes, this whitewashed house of worship shows influences from Byzantine architecture.
Directly across the water from Al-Hamra Corniche is King Fahad's Fountain, which was constructed in the 1980s with a mabkhara-inspired base. It jets water 260 metres into the air, making it the tallest fountain of its type in the world. Visit at night to see the fountain beautifully illuminated by 500 LEDs, which are installed on the surrounding islands.
