The former fisherman’s port town of Al-Khobar underwent an industrial revolution, transforming it into one of the largest cities in Saudi Arabia and an important commercial hub in the Eastern Province.
Things to do in Al Khobar
Along the Persian Gulf runs a stretch of road with an extended waterfront boasting family-friendly beaches, green parks and an array of restaurants. Located in the heart of the city, the gardens make a great picnic spot, where you can enjoy hanging out and people-watching.
Shopaholics can pay a visit to Al Rashid Mall, the biggest shopping centre in Saudi Arabia located only a 20-minute drive from the city. Inside you’ll find luxury shopping, fine eateries and Fun City, a children’s entertainment area boasting arcade games and rides.
In need of some rest and relaxation? Head to Half Moon Bay to find a semilunar beach located just a 25-minute drive around the coast. Spend the afternoon swimming in the ocean and come early evening, head to Sunset Beach to watch the sunset as lush palm trees surround you.
Should you fancy a day indoors, take a 20-minute drive north of Al-Khobar to the Scitech Technology Centre. The museum has historical and scientific interactive displays that will keep the kids entertained for hours, not to mention an observatory for those interested in astronomy. After exploring the museum, head to the IMAX cinema next door to watch a range of new movies on the big screen.
Getting around Al Khobar
Upon arriving into King Fahd International Airport, taxis and car hires are available to take you directly into the city. Once in Al Khobar, a taxi or bus would be advisable, particularly if you’re heading to the southern beaches or science centre in the north.
