Hugging a sheltered bay in the north-west of Jeddah, Al Hamra is an attractive suburb overlooking the Red Sea. It’s home to the elaborate Hasan Anani Mosque and the palm-dotted Middle Corniche Park, as well as a square offering spectacular views of the world’s tallest fountain.
Things to do in Al-Hamra'a
Soak up the views across the Red Sea from the waterfront trails of Middle Corniche Park, which is dominated by two avenues of towering palm trees. The expansive lawns are a popular setting for family picnics and you can purchase hot drinks, sodas and snacks from the park’s food vendors.
Adjacent to Middle Corniche Park is the Hasan Anani Mosque, which features two soaring minarets, intricately carved wooden doors and Islamic calligraphy on its walls. It was established by Sheikh Hassan Mohammed Khalil Anani in the 1980s and is fronted by an open square where kids can play. Traditional furnishings from across Saudi Arabia are displayed at the nearby Museum of Home Art where you’ll find ornate lamps, antique storage vessels and beautifully upholstered sofas.
For a front-row seat of King Fahad’s Fountain spurting water 200 metres into the air, head to the Jeddah Fountain View square. Constructed in the early 1980s, the fountain is the tallest in the world and uses salt water from the Red Sea in its impressive displays. It’s particularly magical at night when the fountain is illuminated by more than 500 spotlights.
Getting around Al-Hamra'a
Al Hamra is around 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Jeddah and 20 minutes from King Abdulaziz International Airport. Buses travel throughout the suburb, although taxis are the main means of getting around. The waterfront area of Al Hamra can easily be explored on foot.
