Centred around the manufacturing city of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg lies in the far south-west of Germany along the border with France and Switzerland. It was created from the historical territories of Baden, Hohenzollern and Württemberg and was designated as a state in 1952. Sightsee in Stuttgart. Serving as the capital of Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart is an important manufacturing hub home to the headquarters of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. You can learn about the history of car manufacturing at the museums dedicated to both brands before browsing the impressive art collection at the Staatsgalerie. To the north of Stuttgart is one of Europe’s largest zoos and botanical gardens, Wilhelma, which is famed for its miniature Alhambra.
Visit Hohenzollern Castle. Perched atop a hilltop to the south of Stuttgart is Hohenzollern Castle, a fairytale-like residence constructed in a Gothic Revival style in the 19th century. Join a guided tour to explore its palatial rooms and beautiful chapel, with a significant collection of artwork, silverware and the Prussian king’s crown on display. Open-air concerts and changing exhibitions are regularly held at the castle.
Relax on the shores of Lake Constance. Stretching across the south-east of Baden-Württemberg is Lake Constance, which marks the border between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It’s fringed by the medieval city of Konstanz with its decorative cathedral and frescoed town hall, as well as the colourful town of Meersburg. Lake Constance is a popular setting for boat cruises and water sports that include sailing, canoeing and SUPing.
Getting around Baden-Wurttemberg
Stuttgart Airport is the main aviation gateway to Baden-Württemberg and has flights to destinations across Europe and the Middle East. Trains connect to major towns and cities throughout the state while buses serve smaller destinations. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around.
