Things to do in Leonberg
Beautiful half-timbered houses frame the main square and give Leonberg a storybook aesthetic. Some of the oldest date back to the 15th century. Farmers markets, antique fairs and outdoor concerts are just some of the community events held in the square.
Stroll around the grounds of Leonberg Castle and get lost in a wonderland of perfectly clipped hedges and bubbling fountains. Sooner or later, you’ll notice an abundance of enormous dogs in Leonberg. The lovable breed is known as the Leonberger and originates from St. Bernards, Newfoundlands and Pyrenean Mountain Dogs. Most owners are happy to let you pet their gentle giants as they walk around town.
Stadtmuseum covers centuries of history, from the Neolithic Age to modern times. It’s housed in a postcard-perfect building and charts the people, places and events that have shaped Leonberg over history. Learn about rural life at the Farmhouse Museum and visit the birthplace of the famous German poet, Christian Wagner. His former family home is reimagined as a literary museum celebrating his life and works.
Rent a bike and explore the picturesque countryside surrounding Leonberg. Trails take you through sun-dappled forests and past wildflower-filled meadows. Some of the prettiest routes skirt the banks of the river and pass historic watermills.
Getting around Leonberg
Leonberg is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The town is in Baden-Württemberg, 30 minutes from Stuttgart by car or train. Stuttgart Airport is a 20-minute drive away.
