About Blaubeuren

Blaubeuren is a charming town set in the foothills of the Swabian Alps. The historic town centre is filled with half-timbered buildings, many reimagined as atmospheric shops, cafes and taverns. Just outside the town centre, a 21-metre-deep natural spring known as Blautopf will mesmerise you with its jewel-coloured water.

A short stroll from the town centre, Blautopf dazzles with its vibrant blues and greens. The water is rich in limestone particles, which react with natural light to create the stunning colours you see on the surface. Blautopf is one of the deepest natural springs in the country and feeds the Blau River, a major tributary of the Danube.

A short walk from the spring, Blaubeuren Abbey was founded in 1085 by the Benedictine Order. The ancient abbey was built in the Gothic style and has been beautifully maintained over the centuries. Don’t miss the old bathhouse, one of the best-preserved in the country.

Blaubeuren is a launchpad for outdoor adventures in the Swabian Alps. There are plenty of scenic hiking trails to explore, as well as cycling and mountain biking trails. The trail up to Blaufelsen lookout rewards hikers with sweeping views over the village and the surrounding countryside. Continue along the ridge to discover the ruins of an ancient castle.

Small but engaging, Urgeschichtliches Museum Blaubeuren showcases archaeological finds from across the region. Highlights include the Venus of Hohle Fels, one of the oldest prehistoric portraits ever discovered.
