A breezy seafront promenade lined with lofty palms welcomes you to Distrito Centro. Browse designer boutiques along tree-lined avenues and uncover eclectic cafes, galleries and artisan studios hidden down medieval alleys.
Things to do in Centre
Enjoy dazzling views over the Bay of Palma from Palau de l'Almudaina. The former Islamic fort watches over the bay and is the official residence of the King of Spain. Tours take you behind the scenes of the centuries-old stronghold and into rooms decorated with antiques, tapestries and royal treasures.
The Gothic spires and flying buttresses of Catedral de Mallorca soar over Distrito Centro. Also called La Seu, the cathedral features a honey-coloured limestone façade. Sunlight streams into the cathedral through an enormous rose window. Admire ornate iron candelabras designed by Antoni Gaudí and climb the stairs to the roof terraces for spectacular views over the city centre and sparkling Bay of Palma.
Get lost in the winding, cobblestone streets of the Old Town. The narrow lanes are lined with souvenir shops where you can buy shimmering Mallorca pearl jewellery, handmade leather shoes and colourful blown glass homewares. Taverns spill onto the sidewalks and serve fruity sangria and spicy seafood paella.
Grand buildings frame Plaça Major, a rectangle-shaped plaza surrounded by cafes and shops. Follow narrow Carrer de Sant Miquel to Plaça d’Espanya, a palm-lined square anchored by a statue of a Mallorcan king. To the east is Sa Gerreria, a hip neighbourhood packed with tapas bars and bistros.
