Things to do in Alicante City Centre
Barrio de la Santa Cruz, the city’s atmospheric old quarter, is a maze of cobbled streets and alleys. You’ll stroll past brightly painted houses decorated with wooden shutters, pot plants and flowers. From here, you can make the steep climb up to Castillo de Santa Bárbara, the city’s medieval castle. It’s perched on a hilltop and commands sweeping views over the city and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.
Discover centuries of history at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante. The dimly lit rooms are filled with Roman artefacts, Middle Ages weapons and Iberian ceramics. You’ll see treasures found at nearby archaeological sites like the Sanctuary of Pla de Petracos and El Tossal de Manises.
Marvel at towers of cheese, charcuterie and fresh produce in Mercat Central d'Alacant. The market is housed in a grand building fronted by palm trees and is an epicurean paradise. Stock up on fruit from nearby orchards and sample locally-made olive oil, smoked meats and preserves. The building is stunning and features a honey-coloured brick façade and stained glass windows.
Alicante is famous for rice, fish and “fideu” noodles tossed with shellfish and lemon juice. Dig into enormous plates of seafood paella and “arroz con costra” claypot rice. For dessert, treat yourself to a slab of “turron” Spanish nougat studded with almonds.
Getting around Alicante City Centre
Alicante City Centre is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Local buses and taxis are a good way to cover longer distances. Alicante Airport is a 20-minute drive away.
