Valun is a lively coastal village laced with cobblestone streets. It’s a gateway to the island of Cres and combines a beautiful setting on the Adriatic Sea with authentic Croatian history, culture and hospitality. Well-preserved stone houses line the streets of Valun and as you explore the historic centre, you’ll come across landmarks like the Church of St. Mark, which was built in the 11th century. Stroll down to the harbour to admire colourful wooden fishing boats bobbing on the crystalline waters.
Valun is fringed by silver-pebble beaches where you can bask in the Adriatic sun and swim in azure waters. Embark on a boat trip to explore the hidden bays and coves that dot the shoreline. Off the beach, Valun invites you to discover lush Mediterranean landscapes. Rent a bike and cycle through fragrant pine forests and sun-drenched olive groves.
Seafood is a specialty on Cres and caught fresh from the Adriatic Sea. Dine at waterfront restaurants and enjoy Croatian favourites like “Kamenice s Limunom” oysters served with lemon juice, “hobotnica pod pekom” slow-cooked octopus and “crni rizoto” rice coloured with jet-black cuttlefish ink. Seafood dishes pair perfectly with crisp Croatian white wines like Pošip and Grk.
Getting there
Valun is on the western side of Cres Island, a 20-minute drive from the town of Cres. Ferries connect the island with the Croatian mainland, as well as Italy and other islands in the Cres-Losinj archipelago.
