Things to do in Split City Centre
Diocletian’s Palace stands guard over the harbour and is one of the best-preserved Roman strongholds in Europe. The complex is enormous, and you can easily spend hours exploring the maze of streets, alleys and squares within the palace. Cafes, bars and tavernas spill onto streets and keep the district lively well after sunset.
The octagon-shaped Cathedral of St Domnius recalls the city’s ancient past. Enter through a set of enormous carved wooden doors and admire the soaring Corinthian columns made with gleaming red granite that support the magnificent central dome. Your ticket also unlocks behind-the-scenes access to the treasury, crypt and centuries-old Temple of Jupiter.
Admire works by an iconic Croatian sculptor at the Meštrović Museum. The collection is housed in a handsome villa designed by Ivan Meštrović and showcases works carved in bronze, marble and granite. The Mediterranean-style gardens are beautiful and command sweeping views over the Adriatic Sea.
Spend the day sunbathing on Kašjuni, a beautiful beach perched on the tip of the Marjan Peninsula. Rugged cliffs covered with lush greenery frame the postcard-perfect beach. White pebble sand stretches down to the Adriatic Sea. The water is calm, shallow and perfect for swimming. Sunbathe on the sand or rent a cabana from the trendy beach bar, which serves cocktails and seafood.
From rustic restaurants hidden down cobbled alleys to elegant waterfront brasseries overlooking the harbour, dining in Split City Centre is a pleasure. Local “konobe” taverns serve budget-friendly meals like “pasticada” beef stew and “przene girice” fried fish.
