Step into a fairytale in the Zadar City Centre. Cobbled streets, centuries-old churches and ancient Roman ruins give the city a storybook aesthetic. The historic centre is perched on a small peninsula and combines a stunning coastal setting with vibrant art, culture and cuisine.
Things to do in Zadar City Centre
Local architect Nikola Bašić designed Zadar’s enchanting Sun Salutation installation. The enormous, circle-shaped sculpture is covered with glass panels that harvest solar energy and use it to power a mesmerising light show. Bašić also designed the Sea Organ, an amazing stone staircase that stretches into the sea. The organ uses wave movements to create nature-inspired music.
Step back in time at the Roman Forum. The ancient site dates back to the 1st century BC and features a series of stone temples and columns. Beautiful St Donatus Church towers over the ruins and recalls the grandeur of the Byzantine Empire. Instead of church services, it’s been reclaimed as an atmospheric venue for concerts and art exhibitions.
Cafes spill onto the cobbled streets and give the Zadar City Centre a cosmopolitan feel. Many are housed in handsome, Habsburg-style buildings. Sit on a sunny terrace and enjoy “kava” coffee and deep-fried “krostule” pastries dusted with powdered sugar. Elegant restaurants will lure you in with blackboard menus featuring octopus stew, grilled fish and stuffed squid.
Venture down side streets to find hidden boutiques and gift shops. Stock up on artisan jewellery, handmade clothing and one-of-a-kind paintings. Locally made olive oils, liqueurs and Croatian wines make excellent souvenirs.
