Delve into the state's natural, cultural and scientific history at the Queensland Museum, which is also home to the hands-on and interactive activities of the Spark Lab. It is located alongside the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Art Gallery, where you’ll find several significant pieces of art that include Richard Godfrey Rivers’ “Under the Jacaranda”. The nearby Galley of Modern Art is the largest gallery dedicated to modern and contemporary art in Australia.
Travelling with kids? They’ll love splashing around in the man-made pools at Streets Beach or letting loose on one of South Bank’s three playgrounds. You can stroll beneath the bougainvillea-covered arbours that wind through the area or stop for a bite to eat at one of the global eateries. Coincide your visit with the weekend Collective Markets, which feature locally-made crafts, clothing and homewares.
On nearby Grey Street, you’ll find trendy boutiques, gastropubs and upmarket eateries, as well as South Bank’s own multi-screen cinema complex. Grey Street connects to South Brisbane War Memorial Park and the Queensland Maritime Museum, which features seafaring artefacts, model ships and historic vessels to explore.
Getting around South Brisbane
South Brisbane is 10 minutes’ drive from the Brisbane CBD and 20 minutes from Brisbane Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular trains connect to the South Brisbane and South Bank railway stations and buses travel throughout the suburb. Most of South Brisbane’s attractions can be accessed on foot.
