Bowen’s location on the Great Barrier Reef means you’ll find a collection of spectacular beaches, small coves and inlets. An off-the-beaten-track coastal gem, Bowen’s low-key charm is highlighted by its wide streets, Heritage-listed buildings and natural wonders.
Things to do in Bowen
The first stop on any visit to Bowen is the beach. The town has eight main beaches, with Horseshoe Bay being its crown jewel. Soak up the sunshine along the picturesque coast or hit the water for a day of bodyboarding in the gentle waves.
To learn more about the town’s rich history, visit the Bowen Historical Museum. Regarded as one of the best local history museums in Central Queensland, it features an interesting collection of shipwreck relics, memorabilia and historical artefacts relating to Bowen’s Aboriginal history.
Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of chances to reel in a big catch, whether fishing off the coast, chartering a boat, joining a group tour or embarking on a sailing expedition. If you’d rather enjoy the indoors, catch a flick at Summergarden Theatre, a historic Art Deco cinema.
Sample some of the local cuisine at Le Sorelle Coffee House, where its garden-like decor with hanging planters creates a charming atmosphere to enjoy homemade fudge and cakes. Jochheims Pies is the most famous bakery in town and even Hugh Jackman stopped by to sample the incredible range of delicious pies during the filming of “Australia”.
