Serving as the headquarters of the Republic of China Army, Longtan District lies along the Dahan River to the south of Taoyuan City. It’s long been a hub of Hakka culture, which is celebrated at the Taoyuan Hakka Culture Hall and features a theme park where Taiwanese landmarks have been recreated in miniature.
Things to do in Longtan District
For insight into Hakka culture and traditions, pay a visit to the Taoyuan Hakka Culture Hall, which was established in 2007 opposite the Longtan Army Headquarters. You can explore the interactive videos and climb the painted stairs or attend one of the Hakka language events and musical performances regularly held here.
Kids will love spending a day at the Window on China Theme Park, which features several miniature worlds dedicated to Taiwan, China, Europe and America. You can ride the roller coaster, bumper cars and mining train or cool off at Nile Beach while the young ones play on the Open-Chan Water Castle. Live shows also take place throughout the day at the Taiwanese Folk Art Theater.
Sprawling east of Longtan District is the Shihmen Reservoir, which provides irrigation, flood control and hydroelectricity for the people of Taoyuan. It’s also a popular recreational destination, with runners training along its shores and boats cruising its waters to admire the changing colours of autumn. Several restaurants dot the reservoir and serve locally caught fish.
