Encompassing Taiwan’s biggest airport, Dayuan District is north-west of Taoyuan City, directly west of New Taipei. It was originally known as “Toa-khu-hng”, which translates as “vast vegetable garden” in reference to the agricultural fields that dominated the area in times gone by.
Things to do in Dayuan District
Dayuan District is home to the first art museum in Taiwan dedicated to calligraphy, the Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center, which opened to the public in 2021. It was designed by the architect Tianyi Pan and inspired by the five elements of Chinese seal carving. After exploring its changing exhibitions, you can stroll through the surrounding park, which was envisioned as an ink stone with the pond an inkwell.
Nearby is Gloria Outlets, a high-end shopping destination where you’ll find discount stores of international luxury brands. You can browse the latest fashions at Armani, shop for shoes at Jimmy Choo or pick up a designer handbag at Coach. Dotted throughout the American-style mall are cafes and restaurants, including TGI Fridays and Roots.
If you love seafood, head to the Zhuwei Fish Harbour, a living port where you can watch the fishing boats coming and going. You can browse a fascinating array of freshly caught seafood in the fish market or feast on authentic Taiwanese dishes in the second-floor food court. Don’t miss the Rainbow Bridge, a Nielsen-Lohse steel arch span that is particularly impressive when illuminated at night.
