Founded in 1998 in the Old Customs House building, the Immigration Museum explores themes of identity, citizenship and community in Australia. It showcases a variety of travelling exhibitions and conducts educational programs. It also hosts community festivals that celebrate the food, music and traditions of Melbourne’s multicultural communities.
Learn the diverse reasons why people have journeyed from across the world and migrated to Australia, with stories that are both sad and funny featured in the exhibits. Discover what it means to belong in Australia from multiple perspectives and hear how communities have found their feet in the “land down under”.
Admire the Renaissance Revival architecture of the Immigration Museum’s Long Room and trace your own family roots in the Discovery Centre. Immigrants from more than 90 different countries are honoured in the Tribute Garden, which features original artwork by the Melbourne-based artist Evangelos Sakaris.
