Nestled south-east of Yongin, Cheoin-gu is a large residential district that forms part of the Seoul Capital Area. It’s home to the largest water park in South Korea and a museum dedicated to transport, as well as an outdoor film set that brings the country’s history to life.
Things to do in Cheoin-gu
More than 700 classic cars are on show at the Samsung Transportation Museum, which was established in 1998 as South Korea’s first automobile museum. You can get up close to cars and motorcycles from around the globe (and even test drive some), as well as a narrow-gauge steam locomotive manufactured by the Japan National Railway in 1937.
Travelling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to Everland, a sprawling theme park that encompasses thrilling roller coasters and family-friendly rides. You can brave the Tower Bumerango tube slides at Caribbean Bay or test your surfing skills at the Fortress before getting behind the wheel on the Everland Speedway. Also within Everland is the Glen Rose golf course and the Ho-am Art Museum.
History buffs can visit Yongin Daejanggeum Park, an outdoor film set that was established in 2005 by the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation. Opened to tourists in 2011, it features recreated castles, palaces and historic street scenes that give the sense of stepping back in time. While there are no active film shootings taking place at the park, you can experience traditional folk games and archery demonstrations.
Getting around Cheoin-gu
Cheoin-gu is just over an hour by train from the centre of Seoul and around 1.5 hours from Incheon International Airport. There are several train stations dotted throughout Cheoin-gu and buses travel within the district. Having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore Cheoin-gu.
