Famed throughout South Korea for its pine nuts, Gapyeong-gun is a small town and popular weekend getaway from Seoul. The surrounding mountains are renowned for their hiking and mountain biking trails, while beautiful Nami Island is just a stone’s throw away.
Things to do in Gapyeong
Want to see one of South Korea’s most picturesque gardens? Visit the Garden of Morning Calm, created to showcase the concept of Korean beauty to the rest of the world. Leafy walking trails and colourful flower beds connect its 20 themed sections, with the Sukgeun Garden shaped like the Korean Peninsula in a symbol of hope for reunification.
Tackle the steep ups and downs of the challenging Yeoninsan mountain biking course that extends 43 kilometres through the rugged terrain surrounding Gapyeong-gun. If you’re just learning the ropes of mountain biking, try the easier Gangchon course that weaves between Gapyeong and Gangchon.
Hikers can hit the scenic trails along the slopes of Mount Yeoninsan, with local folklore stating that those who visit wishing for love will have their dreams come true. Wildflowers ignite the trails from early spring to late autumn, with the blooming of royal azaleas celebrated during a festival each May.
Jump aboard the ferry to visit the half-moon-shaped island of Nami that lies in the middle of the Han River. Stroll beneath the chestnut and poplar trees, enjoy the rides at the local theme park or test your skills at waterskiing or wakeboarding on the river.
Getting there
