Namyangju is designated as one of South Korea’s “slow cities” for its traditional culture, organic farming and eco-awareness. It is comprised of 12 individual villages, together with ancient royal tombs and a cutting-edge movie studio where some of South Korea’s best films have been shot.
Things to do in Namyangju
Interested in alternative farming? Visit Namyangju Organic Museum, the world’s first museum dedicated to the history and evolution of organic. Learn about traditional Korean farming practices and their connection to the 24 seasonal divisions of the year, as well as how the farmers of Namyangju are harnessing new organic techniques and technology.
Experience the “Universal Studios of Korea” at the Namyangju Studio Complex, which has been used as the filming location for “Seopyeonje”, “Shiri" and “Joint Security Area”. Wander the outdoor set, which includes traditional hanok houses and public buildings, then explore the Film Culture Museum where various props and costumes are on display.
Spend time exploring the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hongyureung Royal Tombs where the remains of Empress Myeongseong and Emperor Gojonare held. Together with the nearby Yureung Royal Tomb where the final emperor of Korea is laid to rest, they form part of 40 Joseon Dynasty royal tombs that are scattered across South Korea.
Overcome your arachnophobia at the JooPil Spider Museum, where thousands of spider specimens, fossils and live species are on display. It educates the public about these often-feared animals through a collection of hands-on activities and insightful exhibitions.
Getting around Namyangju
Namyangju is around 15 minutes’ drive from Seoul and two hours from Incheon International Airport. A train line runs through the city from east to west, with other areas well-serviced by buses and taxis.
