Renowned for its long-established ceramics industry, Icheon is a charismatic city at the base of Seolbongsan Mountain. It has been listed as a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art, with around 80 pottery workshops and 300 kilns scattered throughout its streets.
Things to do in Icheon
Visit the Haegang Ceramics Museum to get a behind-the-scenes look at how Icheon ceramics are made. Traditional Cheongja, Baekje and Buncheong pottery are all produced here, with workshops where you can learn how to make your very own with the help of a skilled artisan.
If you’re interested in seeing Goryeo celadon ceramics and Joseon white porcelain, explore the areas of Saeum-dong and Sindun-myeon. Both are home to numerous workshops where these ancient traditions are being preserved and harnessed to create striking modern ceramic pieces.
Admire the work of one of South Korea’s most-loved artists, Woljeon Chang Woo Soung, at the Woljeon Museum of Art. It’s situated in beautiful Seolbong Park and features paintings, calligraphy and ceramics, together with his personal belongings.
Aside from its traditional ceramics, Icheon is also home to the crane-like peak of Seolbongsan Mountain, which can be explored along one of the well-maintained walking trails. Buddhist temples and natural springs dot the slopes, while the ceramic-themed park of Cerapia and a picturesque lake are nestled in Seolbong Park at the base of the mountain.
Getting around Icheon
Icheon is a one-hour drive east of Seoul and just under three hours from Incheon International Airport. The town is relatively compact and easy to explore on foot.
