Clustered with residential skyscrapers, eateries and shopping malls, Dongtan is a lively township in the city of Hwaseong. It’s home to one of the longest high-speed subway tunnels in the world and is on the doorstep of a centuries-old fortress that has played a significant role in South Korea’s past.
Things to do in Dongtan-myeon
Want to escape the hustle and bustle of Seoul? You can stretch your legs on the tree-lined walking trails of Dongtan Central Park, where you’ll find soccer pitches, a skate park and shaded benches. Children can let loose on the play equipment or run around on the grassy lawns, which are also ideal for picnicking.
Dongtan makes an ideal base for visiting the Mulhyanggi Arboretum, a 34-hectare property planted with more than 1,900 different species. Its name translates as “fragrance of water” and the arboretum was designed to explore the connections between water, woodlands and man. Stroll through the themed gardens and challenge yourself in the hedge maze before admiring the artificial waterfall.
History buffs shouldn’t miss the Doksanseong Fortress, which was where General Gwon Yul and his soldiers fought against the Japanese in 1593. It is believed to have been constructed during the Baekje Period, with several reconstructions and expansions over the centuries. Follow the trail that leads up to the fortress to wander between its ruined battlements and soak up the impressive views across the surrounding countryside.
