Goyang is renowned for its UNESCO-listed royal tombs and historic fortress. It’s home to a fascinating range of museums and big-name department stores, as well as the dynamic planned city of Ilsan New Town.
Things to do in Goyang
Wander the historic fortifications of Bukhansanseong, built in the late-17th century to protect the northwestern approach to Seoul. It stands atop the highest mountain within Seoul’s city limits and is surrounded by a national park popular for rock climbing and birdwatching.
Interested in Korea’s royal history? Visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Seosamneung and Seooreung Royal tombs, which provide a unique insight into the tradition of ancestral worship. They are among 40 tombs built during the Joseon Dynasty to enshrine kings and queens, demonstrating respect for their positions while protecting their spirits from evil.
Spend an afternoon exploring the newly developed satellite city of Ilsan New Town, set around one of the largest artificial lakes in Asia. Ride along the lakeside bicycle path to admire the cactus arboretum and botanical gardens or hike the trails of Jeongbalsan Park to see historic thatched-roof houses.
Learn about local liquor-making traditions at the Baedari Korean Traditional Wine Museum, where vintage brewing artefacts and collectables are on display. Miniature wax figures illustrate how alcohol was produced during the late Joseon Dynasty, with visitors invited to sample some of these traditional Korean liquors.
Getting around Goyang
Goyang lies around 40 minutes’ drive from downtown Seoul and is connected by regular trains along the Seoul Metro system. Buses access all corners of Goyang and much of the city is bicycle-friendly.
