Things to do in West Central District
Beiji Temple is one of the oldest in the city and dates back to 1665. It welcomes you with a colourful façade and intricate wood carvings of dragons and deities. The interior is decorated with paintings and murals by famous Taiwanese folk artists. In the main hall is a centuries-old tablet from the Ming Dynasty.
Shennong Street is one of the best-preserved alleys in Tainan and is lined with centuries-old merchant’s houses. Many have been reimagined as boutique galleries and artists’ studios where you can shop for unique souvenirs.
Escape the city and enjoy a day trip to Taijiang National Park, a lush nature reserve just north of Anping Harbour. Boat rides take you deep into the mangrove swamps, where there’s a chance to spot rare, black-faced spoonbills. Cycling trails make it easy to explore the park on two wheels.
The small but engaging Bo Yang Museum celebrates one of Taiwan’s most famous writers. In addition to famous novels and poems, exhibits cover Bo Yang’s role as an Amnesty International advocate. The Tainan Judicial Museum occupies a handsome Baroque courthouse and features exhibits on the unique history and heritage of the landmark building.
Tainan West Central District is brimming with cafes and restaurants where you can try traditional Taiwanese cuisine. Local favourites include Danzai noodles simmered in shrimp broth, savoury rice pudding flavoured with shitake mushrooms and Taiwanese meatballs stuffed with pork and bean sprouts.
Getting around West Central District
Tainan West Central District is located in the city centre and is easily accessed by Tainan Station. The district is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Tainan Airport is a 15-minute drive away.
