Things to do in Xinhua District
Step back in time on Xinhua Old Street. The thoroughfare is lined with handsome Baroque-style townhouses built during the Japanese era. Some of the buildings house produce stores and others are stocked with herbal medicines and traditional Taiwanese snacks.
Scenic trails wind through the Hutoupi Scenic Area and take you through lush camphor and acacia forests. The trail around Hutoupi Reservoir is great for leisurely strolls and bike rides. You can also rent swan boats and enjoy a scenic paddle on the lake. In summer, the forest is blanketed in bright yellow blossoms from the golden shower trees.
The Yang Kui Literature Memorial Museum introduces you to beloved Taiwanese author Yang Kui. A series of paintings, photographs and manuscripts chart the life and legacy of Kui, who shot to fame during the Japanese colonial period.
An easy drive or bus ride from Sinhua District, the National Botanic Gardens at Xinhua Chung Hsing University is a tree-filled sanctuary. Choose from a variety of well-marked trails, some leading through low-altitude forests and others taking you to serene temples. After dark, the forest glows with golden fireflies.
Getting around Xinhua District
Sinhua District is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The district is a 30-minute drive from Tainan City and one hour by bus. Taxis are a fast and affordable way to get around Sinhua District while local buses are also an option. Tainan Airport is a 30-minute drive away.
