About Sawtell

Located where the Bonville Creek flows into the Pacific Ocean, Sawtell is a picturesque coastal village south of Coffs Harbour. It boasts a sweeping curve of sand that lures holidaymakers in for its excellent surfing, swimming and fishing opportunities and serves as a gateway to the beaches and rainforest of Bongil Bongil National Park.

Things to do in Sawtell

Spend your days relaxing on the sands of Sawtell Beach, which extends from the ocean pool at Bonville Headland to Boambee Head in the north. Kids will love swimming in the sheltered waters of Sailors Bay, which is protected by the rocky reef of Sawtell Island, while surfers can test their skills on the beach’s legendary waves. Climb to the headlands to spot humpback whales migrating along the coast between May and November.

Nature-lovers shouldn’t miss a visit to Bongil Bongil National Park, which is home to one of the largest koala populations in New South Wales. Hiking and mountain biking trails wind through its coastal landscapes, with highlights including the easy Bluff Loop Trail and the Bundagaree Rainforest Walk. Fishing is possible from the pontoon beside Bonville Creek or off the beach around Bundagen Head.

At the other end of Sawtell Beach is the Boambee Creek Reserve, which is located where the Boambee Creek meets the Pacific Ocean. It’s a popular destination for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (both of which can be rented within the reserve). It also features several picnic shelters and barbecue facilities.

Getting there

Sawtell is a 15-minute drive from Coffs Harbour and Coffs Harbour Airport, which has regular flights to Sydney and Brisbane. Sydney is 5.5 hours drive to the south and is connected by train to the Sawtell railway station. The centre of Sawtell is compact enough to explore on foot or by bicycle.
