Nestled in the Vallee de l’Arve, Magland is a sprawling commune in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. It encompasses the hamlets of Gravin, Balme and Oëx, as well as sparkling lakes and several resorts within the Grand Massif ski area.
Things to do in Magland
If you’re visiting in the winter months, head to Les Carroz, a family-friendly ski resort that occupies a sunny plateau. It boasts 32 trails that will appeal to beginner and intermediate skiers, as well as a terrain park designed specifically for board riders. At the end of a thrilling day in the snow, you can rejuvenate at the Aquacîmes complex, which boasts a 30-degree Celsius outdoor pool that offers magnificent views of the snowy peaks.
West of Magland is the distinctive summit of Pointe d’Areu, which rises to an altitude of 2,478 metres. It overlooks the Arve Valley at the end of the Aravis Massif and can be accessed along a spectacular hiking trail. From the top, you can see as far as the Mont Blanc Range and the jagged peaks of the Rochers des Fiz.
Also popular with hikers is the Lac de Flaine, a 12-hectare lake that lies near the Flaine ski resort. Cyclists can explore the famous routes that traverse the surrounding terrain while golfers can enjoy a round at the Golf Flaine Les Carroz. Its 18-hole course offers superb views from its fairways and greens.
Getting around Magland
Magland is around an hour’s drive from Annecy and 40 minutes from Geneva. Geneva International Airport is just under an hour away and has flights to destinations across the globe. Trains connect from towns and cities across southeastern France to the Magland railway station while buses travel throughout the commune.
