Explore the city’s history at the 12th-century Palais de I’lsle, also called “old prison”. Once a prison, this highly-photographed landmark is now a town symbol. Venture inside to see the former prison cells an exhibition of the architecture and heritage of Annecy.
Admire the natural beauty found within Jardins de l’Europe. Grab some French pastries, cheese and baguettes and sit on a bench under the shade of giant redwood trees, then feast your eyes on weeping willows and other centuries-old trees found along the scenic footpaths.
Before you leave, cross Pont des Amours, an iron bridge over Lake Annecy that’s a particularly popular spot for couples. Legend has it that any lovers who kiss while on the bridge will be together for life.
Getting around Annecy
The compact streets of Annecy are best explored on foot. Geneva Airport is 35 minutes by car, while a bus journey to Geneva takes about one hour. There are also direct trains from Paris and Lyon, arriving at the railway station in Annecy’s city centre.
