Serving as the historic capital of Chablais, Thonon-les-Bains occupies a natural terrace overlooking Lake Geneva in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. It’s renowned for its 19th-century funicular and splendid châteaux and is a hub for water sports in the summer months.
Things to do in Thonon-les-Bains
No visit to Thonon-les-Baines is complete without riding the funicular that ascends 46 metres from the Quai de Rivers to the Belvedere. Opening to the public in 1888, it has since been automated and is unique in its curved design. From the gardens at the top, there are magnificent views across Lake Geneva and the Jura Mountains in the distance.
Occupying the 17th-century Château de Sonnaz is the Musee du Chablais, which houses permanent and temporary exhibitions about the history of the province. Learn about life here in the Neolithic era and the establishment of the Duchy of Savoy, as well as the centuries-old sailboats that once crossed Lake Geneva. Artwork from the 18th to 21st centuries are also on display.
Surrounded by vineyards is the Château de Ripaille, a lakeside estate that has served as a Carthusian monastery and a castle throughout its storied past. Join a guided tour to explore its period-furnished rooms while learning about its use as a retreat by the Dukes of Savoy. On the grounds of the estate is the Arboretum de Ripaille, which was established by Andrew Engel in the 1930s.
