The Villefranche-sur-Saone town centre features spacious boulevards, sunny squares and elegant Renaissance architecture. Rue Nationale is lined with beautiful buildings, many reimagined as cafes, boutiques and bistros. Stock up on supplies at a patisserie and stroll down to the banks of the Saone for a riverside picnic.
Villefranche-sur-Saone is a key stop on the Beaujolais Wine Route. The route meanders through the hills and is dotted with vineyards, most specialising in a light red called Beaujolais. Made with Gamay grapes, it will tantalise your palate with notes of tart cherry and hints of smokiness. Stroll through the vineyards and enjoy a wine-soaked lunch at a bistro. Cellar tours offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the winemaking process.
The Beaujolais Wine Route is dotted with picture-book stone villages like Vaux-en-Beaujolais. The tiny village is perched on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by emerald-green vineyards. Drive up to the Mt Brouilly viewpoint for sweeping views over the region.
Espace des Vins du Beaujolais is located within the main tourist office and features excellent exhibits on the winemaking region. You’ll learn about the town’s long history of viticulture and get to sample wines from some of the most famous vineyards. Museum Paul Dini occupies the town’s historic grain market and spotlights contemporary art.
Getting around Villefranche-sur-Saône
Villefranche-sur-Saone is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Trains run between Lyon and Villefranche-sur-Saone in around 45 minutes, while rental cars offer the freedom to tour the Beaujolais Wine Route at your own pace. Villefranche-sur-Saone is a 30-minute drive from Lyon and 45 minutes from Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport.
