Kardamaina is a bustling resort town fringed by a long stretch of honey-coloured sand. Popular with British holidaymakers, it’s packed with cafes, bars and traditional tavernas. Whitewashed buildings, lofty palms and hot-pink bougainvillea lend plenty of Mediterranean charm to Kardamaina.
Things to do in Kardamena
Sandy beaches stretch for several kilometres on either side of Kardamaina. They create a perfect backdrop to swim, sunbathe and snorkel. Rent a sun lounger and umbrella or seek out shade at a beachside taverna. Tables and chairs spill onto the sand and offer lunch with a view. Enjoy local specialities like grilled meat, “lambropites” cheese pies and stuffed zucchini flowers. Save room for “katimeria” fried pastries drizzled with honey and dusted with cinnamon.
Work up a sweat on the hike to Antimachia Castle. The hilltop stronghold dates back to the 14th century and commands sweeping views over the Aegean Sea. Explore the ruins before heading to Antimachia Village, where you can admire traditional stone houses and windmills.
Board a boat and sail to Nisyros, a volcanic island just off the coast of Kardamaina. You’ll smell the sulphur in the air as you approach Stefanos Crater. It’s a unique opportunity to walk on the surface of an active volcano and explore the lunar-like landscape. Ropes keep you a safe distance from bubbling mud pots and whistling steam vents.
Kardamaina is a hotspot for British sunseekers. You’ll see plenty of English pubs and fish and chip shops alongside traditional Greek tavernas and gyros shops. Some of the best clubs are along Bar Street and around the harbour. DJ sets, foam parties and dress-up nights attract a younger crowd.
