Tuncurry, which means “plenty of fish” in the Indigenous language, is unsurprisingly famous for its fishing. Whether you want to catch bream in Wallis Lake or reel in trophy-sized marlin on a deep-sea charter, Tuncurry offers something for every angler.
For a change of scenery, stroll across the bridge to Forster, a welcoming town with boutique gift stores, breezy cafes and award-winning restaurants. Forster Main Beach is an easy walk from the town centre and features golden sand and family-friendly ocean baths.
Every winter the east coast of Australia teems with humpbacks and southern right whales on their annual migration. Tuncurry is a fantastic place to experience the spectacle, with local operator Amaroo Cruises offering unforgettable whale-watching trips. If you prefer dry land, grab your binoculars and head to Bennetts Head or Cape Hawke lookouts.
Getting around Tuncurry
The Tuncurry town centre is compact and easy to navigate on foot. If you want to explore the greater Great Lakes Region it's best to rent a car. The drive to Tuncurry takes around two hours from Newcastle or three hours from Sydney.
