About Tewantin

Originally established as a timber town, Tewantin is named after an Aboriginal word meaning “place of dead logs”. By the mid-19th century, it was the main river port for the Noosa area and thrived on the back of the gold and fishing industries. Today, it’s a laid-back destination perfect for exploring the beaches and national parks of the Sunshine Coast.

Stroll down the main street of Tewantin to admire the Royal Mail Hotel, a historic pub that enjoys sweeping views across the Noosa River. Nearby is the Noosa Regional Gallery where contemporary art exhibitions are held, together with artist talks and workshops. It forms part of Tewantin National Park, a protected area of coastal rainforest and swamp stringybarks that provide a habitat for endangered frog species. Around 70 different bird species have been recorded in the park, including eastern whip birds and glossy black cockatoos.

Tewantin is around 15 minutes’ drive from Noosa Heads and 30 minutes from Sunshine Coast Airport, which has flights to destinations across Australia and New Zealand. Regular buses connect from Noosa to Tewantin while renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the region.
