Overlooking the turquoise waters of Lake Silvaplana, Silvaplana is a lively adventure hub in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Settled since Roman times, it lures outdoor enthusiasts wanting to hike and ski the slopes of Corvatsch Mountain and is a popular base for water sports.
Things to do in Silvaplana
If you’re visiting during the snow season, you can hit the downhill pistes of Corvatsch Mountain, which rises to the east of Silvaplana. It boasts the longest illuminated nighttime descent in Switzerland and is surrounded by 200 kilometres of well-prepared cross-country ski tracks. Ice skating is also possible on Lake Silvaplana in the winter months.
Due to its predictable winds, Lake Silvaplana is a popular setting for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with lessons and equipment rental available at the local surf school. There are stations located on the north-east and south-east shores of the lake that offer suitable conditions for both beginners and experienced riders. The lake also lures recreational dinghy sailors and has previously hosted world championship events.
A short drive north of Silvaplana is the Segantini Museum, which is located on a small hill at the entrance to St. Moritz. Resembling a mausoleum, the building (designed by Nicolaus Hartmann) houses works by the Italian artist Giovanni Segantini, who spent his final years living nearby. Many of his paintings are inspired by life in this high alpine landscape and capture the region’s unique light.
