First mentioned in the 14th century, Celerina-Schlarigna is a Swiss mountain resort on the doorstep of St. Moritz. Its charming village centre is clustered with traditional houses and enjoys the most hours of sunshine per year of any place in the Engadine Valley. In addition to being a winter skiing hub, it serves as a base for hikers and mountain bikers in the summer months.
Things to do in Celerina/Schlarigna
One of Celerina-Schlarigna’s most important architectural landmarks is the Swiss Reformed Church of San Gian, which rises atop a hill overlooking the Inn River. Dating back to 1478, it is heritage listed and features a hand-painted wooden roof and impressive frescoes. Also of note is the Baroque-style Church of Bel Taimpel with its cockerel-topped tower.
Celerina-Schlarigna lies at the base of the Corviglia-Piz Nair ski area, which offers runs that will appeal to all abilities. You can go sledding and snowshoeing, skate on the sunniest ice rink in Europe or explore the Upper Engadine lakes on the extensive network of cross-country skiing trails.
Once the snow melts, you can soak up the magnificent views of Celerina-Schlarigna from one of the cable cars, which access an abundance of mountain hiking trails. A highlight is the famous Via Engiadina, which extends for 82 kilometres through the valley. For the best views of the lakes and the icy peaks of the Bernina Massif, head to the mountain restaurant on Muottas Muragl.
