The oldest part of the village dates back to the 4th century and is surrounded by medieval fortifications. You’ll notice many of the buildings are constructed from locally quarried volcanic rock, which gives the village a dramatic look.
The Cathedral of St. Pierre towers over the village and features a Gothic facade made from black basalt rock. The views from the South Tower will leave you breathless. Next door, Musee de la Haute-Auvergne occupies the former Bishop's Palace. Inside, you’ll find archaeological artefacts, centuries-old cheese-making tools and religious art.

Saint-Flour is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, while rental cars offer the freedom to explore the Auvergne region at your own pace. The village is a 1.5-hour drive from Clermont-Ferrand and three hours by bus. Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport is a three-hour drive away.
