Australia’s artesian spa capital, Moree nestles in the picturesque Gwydir Valley of rural New South Wales. The town clusters along the banks of the Mehi River and is home to beautifully restored Art Deco buildings that hark back to its early years as a major cotton-growing centre.
Things to do in Moree
A soak at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre is a highlight of any visit, with its pools fed by mineral-rich waters from the Great Artesian Basin. Indulge in a remedial massage or just enjoy the therapeutic qualities of the 41-degree-Celsius baths.
Join the Moree Heritage and Art Deco Guided Walk that departs from the visitor information centre to hear the stories behind the town’s historic architecture. Learn about the importance of Moree to the surrounding agricultural communities, with olives, pecans, cotton and wheat all grown in the area.
Be sure to stop in at Trawalla, the flagship property of Strahmann Farm’s pecan growing operations where you can sample pecans straight from the source. You can also tour one of Moore’s cotton farms to see how it is picked, then get a behind-the-scenes look as it’s cleaned before bailing at the local gin.
Take time to visit the Moree Plains Gallery, set within a magnificent Edwardian-style building. It features a permanent collection of works by regional artists, as well as changing exhibitions throughout the year.
