Located just north of Taipei City, Yangmingshan National Park is one of Taiwan's most treasured nature reserves, famous for its contrasting landscape of volcanic ridges, forested mountains and grassy fields. See the famed fumaroles and sulfur crystals of Xiaoyoukeng on a hike to the summit of Mount Qixing. The trail passes bubbling puddles filled with vibrant yellow sulfurs and affords views of the steam rising up through the mountains. After a day of hiking, treat yourself to a relaxing bath at the park’s Longfenggu Hot Springs.
For the best views over Taipei City, follow the Qingtiangang Grassland Trail that ascends gently through fields of maple trees and cherry blossoms. If you’re interested in spotting local wildlife, visit Mount Datun for a chance to see some of the park’s 168 butterfly species.
Getting there
Yangmingshan National Park is about 30 minutes’ drive from Taipei City. Alternatively, take the bus from Jiantan Station or Taipei Main Station to Yangmingshan Station.
